This last week we missed a class due to the holiday but we were able to meet on Thursday. This resulted in Thursday being a bit of a large dose of information. We spoke about preparing for marriage. This was not one of my favorite classes for sure. Never been a fan of dating and not looking forward to it the least bit, plus I'm an older student so it’s not likely to happen anytime soon anyways. Will likely wait until after graduation, but even then, meh. In fact, it’s so long since I’ve even cared about dating and relationships that I don’t remember the last time it I even cared about it. So needless to say, I had a hard time following this class. The few things I do remember discussing was different dating techniques. One of different techniques discussed was Serial Exclusive dating. This seemed somewhat rational, since the whole point of dating was to get to know someone. The best way to get to know someone that I could think of would be to spend time with this person, but appa...

This week in class we discussed gender differences between men and women. We watched a documentary filmed by ABC news that investigated some of the differences between men and women. A large portion of the differences that were discussed in this film were from the perspectives from both genders. Many arguments were made in regard to physical differences especially when strength was an issue. The documentary gave an example of how when women enroll in the military, there is a significantly lower ratio of women that are able to achieve the physical demands that are required to serve in the military. It is because of the lopsidedness of the ratio that the military then alters the physical requirement that women must meet, in order to qualify for service. Several arguments were made in both support and opposition to this alteration. Men tend to have more upper body strength than women which allows for men to achieve the heavier requirements. Another argument for a male dominated military...

This week one of the most interesting things we discussed was family cultures and how they relate to and influence the culture of society. As we know, governments are made up of communities and communities are made up of families. So it should come as no surprise that one government or country would behave differently than another. Since geographical regions usually separate countries by distance or some other boundary, the families that inhabit those regions would naturally evolve differently than their neighbors due to a lack of communication and regular interaction. This is evident in not only within the United States but also within other countries as well. It can be even be seen with two different countries that share a same border. For example how the United States and Mexico share a border but still have vastly different cultures, though we have shared and adopted different aspects of one another's culture over the years. Families tend to influence other families and as si...

This past week we discussed several different family dynamics that both help and hinder family developments. We touched on conflict theory and how it can help develop positive and negative relationship characteristics. We discussed how the white picket fence principle, that describes how outward expressions of an individual family (i.e. how they live, how they decorate their home inside and out etc.) can demonstrate how that family is functioning, or not functioning for that matter. We also discussed how like in society, families consist and operate with a list of unspoken rules, Rules that will be followed, but in order to follow them, you typically have to learn them the hard way through trial and error. One of the things I found interesting was how conflict can be used to enhance and progress a relationship if it is carried out in the right manner. For instance, the use of violence in a relationship is NOT a healthy conflict management style, but rather destroys on ...

I find it interesting that today’s media outlets want us to believe everything that they tell us without any thought on our part. With today’s toxic political climate being at an all-time high, it is getting harder and harder to sift through all of the opinions and find actual facts. In my Family Relations class, we discussed an article that pointed out some serious issues in regards to a brief that was published by the American Psychological Association back in 2005. The brief published by the APA states that "Not a single study has found children of lesbian or gay parents to be disadvantaged in any significant respect relative to children of heterosexual parents" (p. 15). In the article we read in class, we read that facts are not always facts. In today’s political climate, we have come to know that certain political organizations regularly change the definitions of words and facts in order to fit their political agendas. The article published by the American Psy...
